SPECT-CT

SPECT-CT

The uses for this nuclear medicine machine very similar to an x-ray, but uses a camera sensitive to gamma rays and X-rays.   As on a radiograph, each of the images obtained is two-dimensional, with the SPECT – CT we can combine many images taken from different positions around the patient to obtain a three dimensional image. This three-dimensional image can then be manipulated to obtain dimensional body sections in any orientation. As an additional benefit any findings in nuclear medicine images is immediately correlated with a CT image, dramatically increasing how specific the finding is, and often avoiding unnecessary additional studies. SPECT-CT increases the information generated by a wide variety of nuclear medicine studies such as the study of perfusion of the heart muscle during rest and exercise, brain study, whole body thyroid study after resection, parathyroid study in search for parathyroid adenoma, bone scan for the entire skeletal system, among others.
